Animal Agency - Giving Animals a Voice in their Training

Animal Training
If you are new to The A.B.C., please be aware that we will require a recent clean bill of health from your animal's veterinarian and shall take a detailed history prior to training. For all new clients, the first training session is dedicated to teaching you, the handler, fundamental ethical training techniques and theory in a practical hands-on manner. Please call to discuss you and your animal's needs so we can help you find the right training programme for you both. All our training is currently carried out on a 1:1 basis providing you with dedicated tailored training.
Why Training Matters
Training plays an important role in supporting both animals and the people who care for them:
-
Training helps animals live safely and comfortably in human environments, reducing the risk of situations that may be stressful or unsafe for animals or humans.
-
It strengthens communication between humans and animals, fostering mutual understanding and a more secure bond.
-
Cooperative care training allows animals to voluntarily participate in procedures such as grooming or veterinary examinations, helping to reduce fear and stress.
-
Training provides valuable mental stimulation, supporting emotional wellbeing and reducing frustration, boredom, and stress-related behaviours
In reports from Bristol University / behaviour clinics: between 13%–20% of dog owners reported that their dogs show Separation Related Behaviours (barking, howling, destructive or toileting behaviour when alone).~82.7% of dogs are reported to pull on the lead.

Alternatively, your dog may benefit from a refresher in loose-lead walking. As always, for those new to the A.B.C., the first session will focus on teaching you, the handler, how to train your dog effectively and humanely.

Vet Visits / Husbandry & Grooming Programme
Cooperative care plays a vital role in the welfare of our animals. Many pet parents avoid veterinary or grooming visits due to the stress it causes both them and their animals. 65% say it’s difficult preparing for vet visit due to pet’s nerves; 30% said they’ve put off a visit because it’s so stressful. At the A.B.C. we offer a programme designed to support you in helping your animals. If your cat or dog already has a severe fear of the vets or groomers, you will need to book a behaviour modification programme, and may require a referral from your veterinarian. However, if your dog or cat has not yet reached that stage, we can focus on training to help them build a positive relationship with their healthcare providers. Our Care training package is booked in blocks of 4 one-to-one sessions.
